“We had the satisfaction of finding the finest harbour in the world,” Captain Arthur Phillip, the first governor of Sydney, wrote on discovering Sydney Harbour in 1788.
Despite the massive city of 4.5 million that’s grown around it, Sydney Harbour remains one of the world’s great aquatic playgrounds. It’s at its most brilliant in the summertime from October to March, when Sydney-siders strip down to swim, fish and boat around in its sparkling blue waters.
These photos were taken by Sydney-based photojournalist Ian Neubauer at Watsons Bay, a former fishing village on the northern-most point of Sydney Harbour’s south head that is now home to a smattering of affluent homes and a handful of low-key restaurants. Only 15km from the central business district, Watson’s Bay remains a million metaphorical miles away from the hustle and bustle of city life. Think fish and chips on the beach, watching yachts bob up and down in the marina and blood-red sunsets on a warm summer’s day.
